Body-safe materials — what to choose
Silicone, glass, metal, ABS and TPE — what is porous, what is safe, and why does it matter?
Sex toys are poorly regulated in many countries, and packaging does not always identify the material. Here is what to look for.
Non-porous materials (recommended)
- Medical-grade silicone — soft, durable and boilable
- Borosilicate glass — smooth and suitable for temperature play
- Stainless steel — heavy, hygienic and exceptionally durable
- ABS plastic — hard and commonly used in vibrators
Porous materials (avoid for insertion)
- TPE or TPR — rubbery and able to retain bacteria
- Jelly or PVC — may contain phthalates despite safety claims
- Leather where it touches mucous membranes
Rule of thumb: if a toy smells strongly of plastic or feels oily, treat it as porous.
